In 1865 William Booth gave working in the pawnbrokers to become an outdoor preacher. One night as he preached outside the Blind Beggar pub missioners heard him and were so impressed that they invited him to lead a series of meetings they were holding locally. From that grew The Christian Mission, offering God's love to some of Englands poorest people. Booth would "stumble home night after night haggard with fatigue, often his clothes were torn and bloody bandages swathed his head where a stone had struck", wrote his wife.
He became the first General of the Salvation Army, who continue to work with the poor, and serve God in the east End of London today.
his statue is on Whitechaple road near to the Blind Beggar.
